5 hottest trends to come out of New York Fashion Week 2017

REVOIR Blog- New York Fashion Week 2017

The city that never sleeps is in full flight once again for Fashion Week. From February 9th-16th the world’s most iconic designers, fashion editors, influencers, models and celebrities come together to unveil the Autumn fashion trends that will take the world by storm. We couldn’t help but reflect on the five standout labels and designers so far.

Birds of Paradise

Elizabeth Kennedy continues to rise to the forefront of up and coming designers. Showcasing a collection of glamorous gowns and dresses, Kennedy found inspiration in the textures and dramatic colour combos of birds. "I never thought about birds much, I don't keep them as pets, but I became more and more intrigued by these amazing colours that I never would've dreamed could go together - like the burgundy and light blue, or that emerald with black." It just goes to show, when in doubt, look towards mother nature for a little fashion genius.

Black on Black

Alexander Wang loves to keep the fashion world guessing. Unveiling his collection in a 100-year-old theatre in Harlem with the runway twisting through the crowd, his rough, urban edge was reflected in the black on black colour palette. The stand out pieces ranged from dresses featuring slashed hems, dead straight overcoats and structured jackets, along with jumpsuits and skin-tight stretched denim. Wang’s pieces were complemented by the graffiti on the walls; this distinctly black, city style would be right at home on the streets of Melbourne this season.

Celebrating Women

Christian Siriano was all about feminine opulence this season with a throwback to old world glamour. With a bevvy of models of different shapes and sizes, Siriano has long celebrated body diversity in fashion, stating, "We are celebrating women as much as we can." This season’s collection emphasised metallic copper, black, silver and plenty of texture. A stunning collection embracing curves, romance and a strong feminine edge.

Space Cadets

Lacoste’s spacey 2017 collection would have even The Jetson’s in awe! Designer, Felipe Baptista found inspiration in Lacoste Founder, Rene Lacoste’s love of aviation. Lacoste was a pilot, fascinated by the space age and flight. Baptista’s runway was a mess with moon rocks and asteroids as the models shimmered in oversized metallic parkas, mash-ups of nylon, leather and iridescent space prints. Wide leg pants also featured heavily in Baptista's out-of-this-world collection.

Australia Shines

We couldn’t sign off this article without a huge shout out to one of our most prized designers, Dion Lee. There’s a reason Dion is held in such high regard around the globe. This year's NYC runway didn’t fail to impress, offering a sophisticated, innovative and creative collection of bestsellers and show stoppers. Texture was an evident focus this year, with standout pieces of woven leather scattered throughout skirts and torsos. Masculine yet functional, Dion’s collection was definitely one we can be proud of.
